About Powerball X's and O's in South Carolina

This exciting weekly draw game offers you the chance to win a million dollars or more in every single draw. Tickets cost $5 each, making it as pricey as Mega Millions and Millionaire for Life – but every dollar can be used to enter supplementary prize draws by scanning your ticket with the official app, giving you the chance to win NFL-themed awards.

How to play Powerball X's and O's in South Carolina

Head to a retailer and grab a playslip and then mark 8 NFL teams of the 32 available. Pay for your entry, scan the ticket ASAP (if you want to enter the supplementary games), and await the main draw – winning teams are selected at random each time. An NFL team’s performance in the league has no bearing on its likelihood of being drawn. Match 4 minimum to win a prize, and eight matches wins you the jackpot.

Claiming prizes in South Carolina

Prizes up to $500 can be redeemed at any SC Education Lottery retailer at no charge, or mailed to the Lottery's Columbia office. Prizes between $500 and $100,000 can be claimed by mail or in person at the Columbia Claims Center — either way you'll need a completed claim form, a copy of your photo ID, and your signed ticket. Any prize over $100,000 must be claimed in person at the Columbia Claims Center. Players have 180 days from the draw date to claim before a prize expires.

Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets

The SC Education Lottery isn't responsible for tickets that are lost or stolen, so signing the back of your ticket in ink as soon as you buy it is your main protection. A lottery ticket is a bearer instrument, and a completed signature makes it much harder for someone else to cash in on it. Powerball X's and O's tickets can be scanned to enter promotional draws from the moment they're purchased, so it's best to do this sooner rather than later.

Taxes due on prizes in South Carolina

South Carolina withholds tax on lottery winnings at two different thresholds. State income tax withholding kicks in on any prize over $500, while federal withholding of 24% applies once a prize exceeds $5,000. As with any state, this withholding is only an estimate — what you owe depends on your total income and tax situation for the year. South Carolina is one of the states that allows winners to claim through a trust or LLC, protecting their anonymity.
