About Powerball X's and O's in Kansas

Kansas was one of the founding Powerball X's and O's states, giving KS Lottery and NFL fans the chance to show their support for their favorite teams on their tickets as well as in the stadium. You may notice a slight increase in Kansas prizes won for draws where the Chiefs were among the winning teams!

How to play Powerball X's and O's in Kansas

Powerball X's and O's is a simple lottery draw game, just using NFL teams instead of numbers! Players pick 8 out of the 32 NFL teams, and try to match as many of the winning teams as possible in the draw. 4 matches are needed to win, and matching all eight wins the jackpot. The winners are decided at random, not based on their recent performance.

Claiming prizes in Kansas

KS Lottery prizes up to $599 can be claimed at any KS Lottery retailer. Bigger prizes must be claimed in-person at the KS Lottery offices in Topeka, or by mail. If you're not in Kansas anymore, you'll need to make your claim by mail. Be sure to claim your prize within 365 days of the draw you entered, because after this point the ticket will expire. Won a big prize? Don't worry – you can stay totally anonymous, unlike many other states where details about winners are public record.

Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets

Had some trouble with your lottery tickets? Damaged tickets can sometimes still be used to redeem prizes, but you'll need to mail the ticket to the KS Lottery for verification. Lost or destroyed tickets cannot be redeemed, unfortunately, but you can make sure nobody else claims your prize by signing tickets as soon as you've purchased them. In Powerball X's and O's, tickets can be scanned to enter supplementary draws and competitions. This isn't conditional on them being losing tickets, so scan them ASAP in case you lose them later!

Taxes due on prizes in Kansas

In Kansas, winners must pay a 24% federal tax on winnings above $5,000 (same as anywhere else). There's also a 5% state tax due on winnings above $5,000. For winnings above $50, the state automatically withholds any unpaid tax, child support, or other debts due. If you won a jackpot prize, you'll have just 60 days to decide whether to claim the prize as the Cash or the Annuity option – once the time is up, only Annuity is available.
