It's 4 matches to win the smallest prize, and 8/8 are required to win the $1-million-minimum starting jackpot!
Claiming prizes in North Carolina
In North Carolina, prizes up to $600 can be claimed at any NC Lottery retailer. Prizes up to $99,999 can be claimed by mail, at a regional claims center, or at the NC Lottery HQ. If you win $100,000 or more, you'll need to visit the Lottery HQ in person. If you're outside of the state, the only available way to claim is by mail. Be sure to claim before your ticket expires, 180 days on from the date of the draw.
Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets
Problem with your ticket? Damaged or malfunctioning tickets should be sent to the NC Lottery by mail if you think you're due a prize. If your tickets are totally destroyed or missing, you won't be able to claim, unfortunately. Signing your tickets will prevent other people from using them to claim prizes, if you're worried about them being stolen. Be sure to scan your Powerball X's and O's tickets ASAP to get your entries into the supplementary draws – you don't have to wait for the main draw to take place first.
Taxes due on prizes in North Carolina
North Carolina taxes lottery winnings at 3.99% on all prizes over $600 – a lower rate than other states. A federal withholding of 24% also applies to all prizes above $5,000. If you win a big prize, your name and city are a matter of public record, so you won't be able to stay anonymous.
