Claiming Prizes

If you win a prize on Powerball X’s and O’s, you only have a certain amount of time to claim it, so it’s worth completing the process sooner rather than later. Each state where the game is offered may have slightly different rules about claim periods, but you will typically follow this process:

  1. Sign Your Ticket: An unsigned ticket is technically a bearer instrument, so signing it establishes you as the owner.

  2. Make a Copy: Copy the signed ticket and keep the original somewhere safe. Remember that most states won't accept photos or copies as proof of a claim.

  3. Determine Prize Size: Figure out which tier your prize falls into, since that determines where you go and what materials you need to complete the claim.

Small prizes (typically under $600): These can usually be cashed at any authorized retailer in that state, though some retailers cap payouts (often around $100) and will send you elsewhere for more.

Mid-size prizes ($600 and up): You need to go to a district office, claim center, or the state lottery headquarters — not a retailer.

Jackpot or top-tier prizes: Almost always require contacting the state lottery headquarters directly to arrange an in-person claim, where the ticket gets verified and you settle on a payment method.

Claim in the same state where you bought the ticket. Nearly every state lottery requires this — you can't buy in one state and claim in another.

Submit before the deadline, which varies a lot by state — anywhere from about 90 days up to a full year after the drawing. Be sure to check this against your specific state once X's and O's rules are finalized.

What You'll Need

  • The signed original ticket.

  • A completed prize claim form (available from your state lottery's office or website).

  • Valid government-issued photo ID.

  • For larger prizes, often a Social Security number or Taxpayer ID (for tax withholding/reporting purposes), and sometimes additional documentation the lottery requests to verify identity.
