About Powerball X's and O's in District of Columbia

If you're a DC resident, you've got a lot of choice when it comes to picking relatively close-by teams on your play slip, including of course the Commanders. If you win a big DC Lottery prize, you won't have the option to remain anonymous.

How to play Powerball X's and O's in District of Columbia

Playing Powerball X's and O's is similar to most other lotteries – pick 8 options from a list of 32, except instead of numbers, you're picking NFL teams. In each draw, 8 teams are chosen as winners (at random, it's nothing to do with the teams' performance!) and you'll win a prize for matching four or more of your teams. Hold on to tickets even if they didn't win anything, as this game offers lots of supplementary second-chance games and prizes.

Claiming prizes in District of Columbia

Prizes up to $600 can be cashed in at any DC Lottery retailer or claimed by mail. Certain 'Retailer Plus' locations can pay winnings up to $5,000, too. For anything larger, you'll need to visit the DC Lottery's prize center in Shannon Place. All prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the draw date, after which it'll no longer be possible to claim.

Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets

It's the player's responsibility to look after their tickets – if a ticket is too badly damaged, any prizes it could have won may be unredeemable. Likewise, it's not possible to cash in a lost or stolen ticket, so make sure to keep your tickets safe and sign them to prevent others from claiming any prizes due.

Taxes due on prizes in District of Columbia

Lottery prizes above $599.99 must be reported to the IRS, while a district tax of 8.5% is applied to all winnings above $5,000 – one of the steepest rates in the country. Lottery taxes can be complicated and getting them right is important, so we’d recommend getting in touch with a financial advisor if you win anything big.
